Ember funding sparks power-saving breakthrough
Playford Capital has invested in an innovative SA Company, with the potential to significantly cut power bills and associated carbon emissions. The funding will enable Ember to deliver its power-saving breakthrough to market within 12 months.
New Investment Manager for Playford Capital
Shane Cheek has joined Playford Capital as its new Investment Manager. Shane joins Playford from the Australian Institute for Commercialisation (AIC). After roles as AIC’s State Manager and Commercialisation Manager with University of South Australia’s technology transfer arm ITEK Pty Ltd, Shane has a strong background in helping companies realise value from Intellectual Property (IP). He has extensive experience negotiating licensing deals and contract research with research institutions in Australia and overseas. Most recently Shane has worked on commercialisation strategies for high growth companies in the automotive, medical device, energy and mining sectors.
Atlassian Reveals Secrets of its Success
Since its 21-year-old co-founders set it up in 2002, enterprise software company Atlassian has grown into a $30 million-plus company with 10,000 customers, 170 employees and offices in four countries. Mike Cannon-Brookes, who founded Atlassian with fellow university graduate Scott Farquhar, revealed the secrets of his company’s success at the recent Playford Capital Entrepreneur breakfast seminar.
Playford sells Maxamine stake to Accenture (Feb 2008)
Australian seed investor Playford Capital has sold its investment in Maxamine Inc. a global company founded in Australia 11 years ago, to international consulting firm Accenture (NYSE:ACN). Playford Capital, the first professional investor in Maxamine, was part of a unanimous shareholder decision to accept Accenture’s bid to acquire substantially all of the assets of Maxamine.

Seed investor Playford Capital has strengthened its investment team by recruiting a seasoned entrepreneur and angel investor Kent Aughey as an investment manager. Kent will contribute strong contacts in the hospitality, tourism and wine sectors as well as empathy based on the experience of running businesses during the past two decades.

Playford Capital Investee eChannel has announced that is has secured a long term contract with Flight Centre. eChannel's flagship product, Dynamic Creative, will play a key role in optimising Flight Centre's online search marketing campaigns. Dynamic Creative allows paid search advertisements to be created from available product inventory. Flight Centre's search advertising for flight and holiday specials will now be optimised by Dynamic Creative so that customers will have a more relevant experience, and get better results more quickly.

DSpace sale frees funds for further investment (Jul 2007)
Playford Capital will free up funds for new investments after the A$6.75 million trade sale of Adelaide-based DSpace Pty Ltd to US satellite communications leader EMS Technologies. Playford Capital CEO Amanda Heyworth confirmed that “the DSpace sale proceeds are earmarked for new investments in innovative South Australian companies”.
